Milton Erickson Part 1 & 2
Milton Erickson (5 December 1901 – 25 March 1980) was an American psychiatrist and psychologist specializing in medical hypnosis and family therapy. He was the founding president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American Psychopathological Association. Noted for his approach to the unconscious mind as creative and solution-generating. He is also noted for influencing brief therapy, strategic family therapy, family systems therapy, solution focused brief therapy, and neuro-linguistic programming. So Many Stories
I have heard so many stories about Milton Erickson. All the books and published papers. Listened to those who knew and trained with him, but I wanted to meet him, myself. I have even trained with those who have “borrowed” Erickson’s stories and made them their own. Since he died in 1980 before I was even aware that he existed proposed a problem. Deep Trance Identification was going to be my only option here.
I have lots of questions. About his life on the farm before polio. How those experiences taught him his methodology of problem-solving. I have my suspicions and theories, but I want to hear from the man.
Trance Part 1
I found going into trance with the intention of meeting and merging with Milton Erickson an exciting proposition. The light trance went easily into that “middle of KNOW WHERE” state. Then Erickson shows up. After I get over my “star-stuckness”, I notice that his demeanor is very open, and inviting. You get the impression right away this is the nicest guy you’re ever going to meet… but don’t piss him off. I guess we Sagittarians are like that. He didn’t seem old, he was older, but not that broken down old image that I had.
I did all the rest of the procedural parts, i.e., ask for permission, wonder about what it may be like to do an identification with him. Then I had a feeling that there wasn’t anything left to do. The trance, itself was very short 10 minutes or so. I was a little disappointed. There I was thinking we might be up on a mountain hurling thunderbolts but instead it was a short meeting.
I have tried multiple times to do the second trance with no trance partner. I am resigned that this is going to be necessary. The second trance is too deep for me to track all of the components, asks questions record the answers and set my personality off to the side and in essence, experience a possession by Milton Erickson. It’s like Prince Humperdinck, in Princess Bride, who says “I’m swamped”.
I’m very curious and impatient to get on with the second trance. My trance partner isn’t available until next week so I’m stuck with just doing all of the first trance parts and taking notes for my follow-up session.
Trance Part 2
Paralyzed… Milton Erickson, Second Trance
Paralyzed, wasn’t what I was hoping for when I began the second deep trance identification with Milton Erickson. I’ve read the stories. I have a nodding understanding what that must be like. Nothing could have prepared me for the feeling of being unable to move, swallow, talk or even breathe as if I had survived polio. wasn’t all that much fun during the 20 minutes of trance. read more
